Buying a Car

How to buy your first car

£250 Discount for pupils buying a car from us!

So you’ve passed your driving test. Congratulations! We’ve put together some useful advice to consider when buying your first car.

Obviously you’re excited at the prospect of owning your first car but choosing the best deal and the most suitable car for your needs and budget is quite daunting.

Our guide should help to clear a few things up and make your decision that much easier.

What kind of car shall I buy?

Firstly, as a new driver you are considered ‘high risk’ by insurance companies so buying a powerful car is a bad idea. Insurance could cost you a fortune, fuel costs will be high and, given your inexperience, you will put yourself in danger. We always recommend new drivers start with a small modern car , which is easy to drive and has good visibility. This will make driving more enjoyable, safer and cheaper, especially with the high cost of fuel today. Also if you complete a Pass Plus driving course many insurance companies will give you a large discount, or no claims bonus.

How do I go about buying a car?

The first thing to establish is how much money you have to spend, plus what amount you can afford to finance. Always include the cost of taxing and insuring the car as well as the buying price.

Service history is the best way to gauge how well a car has been looked after. If the service history is complete it is a sign that the car has been well cared for and correctly maintained. This should reduce the risk of problems occurring. Ask if the car comes with a service history and receipts of work carried out. If no, it may be best to walk away. If yes, then check through to see what work has been carried out and to make sure all the stamps look authentic.

Make sure the car has a valid registration certificate (V5c) and MOT certificate.

Should I take a test drive?

Yes! It’s important that you check the car for any bumps, rattles, scraping, banging or squeaking. It’s equally important to find out if you like the feel of the car. Is the seating position comfortable? Do you like the look of the cabin? Is the visibility ok?

For your own peace of mind you can always get the car checked independently by the AA or the RAC.

Where Else Should I Look?

If you can’t find the car you are looking for from our website we suggest that websites such as What Car and Parkers will give you a good idea of what most cars are worth, so make sure you do your homework to avoid the risk of being ripped off. Avoid modified cars. It could be a sign that they have been driven badly by a ‘boy racer’, and the modifications could increase your insurance premiums.
